Mills mall to lose another tenant as Christopher & Banks files for bankruptcy

Women’s clothing retailer Christopher & Banks is next in line to check out of the Pittsburgh Mills mall after the corporation announced Jan. 14 that it is filing for bankruptcy amid the covid-19 pandemic. The company had been facing financial struggles several months before filing for bankruptcy. Christopher & Banks reported in December it had lost $10.8 million in the quarter that ended Oct. 31. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, which allows companies to reorganize its finances and move forward with the liquidation process. Christopher & Banks said it “expects to close a significant portion, if not all” of its 449 stores. The company also is talking with potential buyers regarding the sale of its eCommerce platform.

Township Zoning Officer/Building Inspector Edward Crates said the former consumer electronics store that closed in 2018 was renovated to accommodate multiple tenants, two of which are America’s Best Contacts & Eyeglasses and Mattress Warehouse of Tarentum.

The shuttered movie theaters at the Pittsburgh Mills mall in Frazer will reopen this spring under new management that promises cheaper movie tickets. Mark McSparin, president of Michigan-based GQT Movies, confirmed Thursday that the company is taking over the former Cinemark space. It has a tentative opening date of March 1. The move comes a little less than a year after Cinemark announced plans to leave the struggling mall, which has had trouble getting and retaining tenants in recent years.

Frazer hires 3 new police officers, including Officer Brian Shaw Scholarship recipient

Frazer has hired a police officer and two recent police academy graduates to replace three part-timers who resigned to take positions elsewhere. Two of the new hires, Andrew Hakos and Alexander Carmody, recently graduated from the Allegheny County Police Academy, police Chief Terry Kuhns said. The third new hire, Olivier Jean-Gilles, also works as a part-time officer in East Deer. Brian Shaw, for whom the scholarship is named, graduated from the Allegheny County Police Academy in 2014. He worked for the Frazer and East Deer departments before joining the New Kensington police in June 2017. He was killed in the line of duty in November 2017.
