Astronomers have discovered strange radio signals that could be coming from unseen planets. Models suggest that interactions between the magnetic fields of planets and their host stars produce radio emissions – a new potential way to detect planets.

Scientists have heard a message from the stars — specifically, radio signals bursting from distant red dwarf stars which they believe could indicate the presence of hidden planets.

"We’ve discovered signals from 19 distant red dwarf stars, four of which are best explained by the existence of planets orbiting them."

New techniques for spotting previously hidden planets could reveal whether there is life out there. Australian scientists are part of a team that has for the first time used a radio antenna to find exoplanets, which means planets beyond our solar system.
