The P-Series Quantum is positioned between the excellent P-Series Quantum X and the more affordable M-Series Quantum. As you might guess from the naming scheme, almost all of Vizioâs 2020 TVs feature quantum dots, microscopic nanocrystals that enhance color saturation. They also all feature full-array local dimming (FALD) backlights, which make for better than average contrastâespecially during HDR viewing.
Time in the lab revealed something we already assumed: the P-Series Quantum is excellent. For what youâre paying, youâre getting comparable contrast performance to Samsungâs pricier Q80T lineup, plenty of color, and a huge array of features for a lot less than the competition. In fact, the only reason to spring for the higher-end Quantum X is if you really want top-of-the-line brightness and color performance.
Over in Microsoft’s camp, things are less clear cut. The Xbox Series X also costs £449 ($499), but the Xbox Series S – Microsoft’s “digital edition” – comes in at £249 ($299), making it the cheapest next-gen console you can buy.
That saving comes at a cost, however. As we’ll explain below, the Xbox Series S is significantly less powerful than the Xbox Series X, and like the PS5 DE lacks a disc drive. Those looking for 4K gaming will have to purchase the more expensive model.
It’s also worth pointing out that while the lack of a disc drive does keep the cost down in the short term, in the long run, you will pay more for digital games – they tend to be more expensive than their physical counterparts.
(Pocket-lint) - Philips is introducing four-sided Ambilight to TV ranges beyond its flagship models this year, including the newly announced Philips OLED 806 and 856 models.
Both TVs will also come with the new Philips P5 AI Intelligent Picture Engine, while the 806 adds a super-sized 77-inch model for the first time.
Essentially separated by their stands, the 800 series OLED TVs are 4K and compatible with a wide gamut of HDR formats - including Dolby Vision and the latest HDR10+ Adaptive standard, which alters the HDR signature depending on your ambient lighting in the room. Filmmaker Mode will also be available to make movies look as the director intended.
Nowadays, though, our old buddy can do
much more than that, especially once you factor in the HDMI 2.1 specification. This latest HDMI spec has been bandied around for a couple of years now (hit the link for our earlier primer on it), but the latest consumer electronics are only now starting to support the new standard. And 2.1 brings with it some exciting today improvements plus some future-looking potential over existing HDMI specifications.
Major devices that support it include the big two new gaming consoles (the Microsoft Xbox Series X and the Sony PlayStation 5), leading-edge gaming graphics cards (including the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 and the AMD Radeon RX 6800XT), and a wide range of TVs. That said, HDMI 2.1 isn t a front-line feature that gets advertised, or explained, with most PC and consumer-electronics gear. Indeed, you may not see the term at all in a store or when shopping online, even when looking at gear or cabling that supports it. (More about that in a bit.)
