‘These are superspreader settings’: Maskless crowds seen after S.C. bar restrictions lifted ‘These are superspreader settings’: Maskless crowds seen after S.C. bar restrictions lifted By Rob Way and Jared Kofsky | March 11, 2021 at 7:00 PM EST - Updated March 12 at 4:44 PM CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - An infectious disease expert said a surge in COVID-19 cases is “likely” over the next few weeks and months after videos show crowded bars in downtown Charleston. The latest videos were shot on March 5, the first Friday night after Gov. Henry McMaster lifted South Carolina’s 11 p.m. alcohol sale restriction. They show large crowds inside and outside bars along Upper King Street, an area well known for its nightlife.

2020 in review: The best, worst, most and least of Charleston food-and-beverage's bad year

Here’s yet another ritual disrupted by the coronavirus: At the end of every year, food writers have to take stock of everything that’s occurred over the past 365 days and come up with some kind of overarching theme to hold together all of the disparate developments. For instance, when I surveyed the scene in December 2019, I was struck by the downsizing occasioned by high rents and staff shortages: I told Eater Charleston that the headline we were most likely to see in 2020 was “Popular chef scraps plans for massive new restaurant; will instead open unmanned small plate vending machine.”
