Over the past three years, public schools in District 2, the Manhattan district where my children attend, have lost more than a quarter of their students. Some of this is no doubt due to the pandemic and flight from the city in general. Less obvious to those without students in the system is a momentous change in middle schools railroaded through by ex-Mayor Bill de Blasio using the pandemic as a pretext.
