Philadelphia’s soaring rates of homicide and gun violence are down to deep-rooted causes – and the solution ultimately lies in the hope offered by the Gospel, along with concrete action, say several archdiocesan clergy.
Since January, the city has seen a 33% increase in homicides over 2020, with at least 129 victims. As of April 6, there were 96 fatal shootings, with another 418 nonfatal gun attacks.
Last year was its own grim milestone, marking a 30-year high in Philadelphia’s murder rate, and exceeding the 2019 homicide total by 40%.
Those wounded or killed have included pregnant women and children as young as 11 months. One 55-year-old man, a member of a video production team, was shot dead March 31 in the city’s Strawberry Mansion section while filming an anti-violence documentary for Netflix.

Rosary procession ‘reclaims the city’ for life, healing
Participants in a Feb. 20 rosary procession organized by the Sisters of Life walk through downtown Philadelphia after gathering outside the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul. The hour-long event, which covered more than two miles of city streets, was met with both welcome and rejection as participants prayed for the protection of human life and the healing of the culture. Denver Newsroom, Aug 28, 2020 / 04:50 pm (CNA).- Rehumanize International, a secular pro-life organization, is set to hold its annual conference Saturday virtually, with an eye to life topics such as abortion, assisted suicide, and the death penalty, as well as police violence and torture.
Aimee Murphy, founder and executive director of Rehumanize International, told CNA that the overarching theme of the Aug. 29 conference is that every human value has worth, and an inherent dignity. She said they plan to emphasize this common dignity and discuss ways people can work together regardless of their differences.
“That inherent dignity that we all share is not something that can be taken away, it’s not a matter of circumstance,” she said.
