The Nigerian government has appealed the judgment of an appeal court in Italy which rejected its $1.1 billion compensation request against Eni, Shell, and others in a civil proceeding over the OPL 245 affair. Italian prosecutors had put the oil companies, and some of their executives on criminal trial over allegations of corruption in the transfer of the oil block from Malabu Oil and Gas Ltd. to Shell and Eni for a consideration of $1.1 billion, in addition to the payment of $200 million as signature bonus to the Nigerian government.

Multinational oil giant, Eni, and subsidiary, Royal Dutch Shell, have said the court judgment in Milan, Italy acquitted it from the $1.092billion failed Malabu oil deal, noting that it was bothered with a certain United Kingdom probe into the matter.
Eni said in a statement that there was “no case to debate” as the court judgment stands.
SaharaReporters had last week reported that the UK was asked to probe allegations made by Nigeria’s former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke that the Mutual Legal Assistance, made by UK to Italy which aided his recent judgment in Milan, was forged.

Nigeria’s application before a Milan court for an order compelling Eni and Royal Dutch Shell to pay $1.092bn as an immediate advance payment for damages it is claiming in one of the oil industry’s biggest-ever corruption trials has failed.
