Cover captures medalist honors with final-round 65
Patrick Cover turned pro in 2018 and spent the 2019 season playing on PGA TOUR Series-China.
PINE MOUNTAIN, Georgia It was 224 days ago that Patrick Cover sat on the patio outside the clubhouse at Callaway Gardens Resort. He had just shot a 63 in the final round of the LOCALiQ Series’ Classic at Callaway Gardens. Without scoreboards visible, for a fleeting moment he thought he may have won the tournament or perhaps earned a spot in a playoff. Neither happened as Cover came up a stroke short of both Stoney Crouch and Hayden Shieh. Friday, Cover stood on the same patio.

PINE MOUNTAIN, Georgia Luke Schniederjans had a decision to make. Should he return to Georgia Tech and take his “COVID year” offered by the NCAA to college athletes because it canceled so many sports in 2020? Or should he turn pro he had already graduated, after all and go the play-for-pay route? Schniederjans chose the latter, saying, “I don’t think there was a bad decision either way.” His choice to leave Georgia Tech is paying off. Through 36 holes of the Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada’s Qualifying Tournament at Callaway Gardens’ Mountain Course, Schniederjans’ 68-66 opening two rounds puts him at 6-under, giving the Alpharetta, Georgia, resident a one-shot advantage over count ‘em six players on the tightly bunched leaderboard.
THE FLATS – After playing its first tournament in nearly 10 months last weekend, Georgia Tech’s golf team travels to the West Coast this week to compete in its second event within a 10-day period, facing a heavyweight field in the Southwestern Invitational Monday through Wednesday in Westlake Village, Calif.
With last spring’s schedule cut short and fall events cancelled due to COVID-19, the Jackets were left to compete in various amateur events throughout the summer and fall. Head coach
Bruce Heppler moved to add two events to the front end of Tech’s spring schedule, entering his team in the Camp Creek Seminole Invitational last week (Tech finished seventh out of 10 teams) and the Southwestern Invitational. The Yellow Jackets’ slate includes seven events prior to the ACC Championship near the end of April, which will be played at the Capital City Club’s Crabapple Course in Woodstock, Ga.
