Rare Atlantic Sturgeon Found Washed Up In Sandwich Salt Marsh

The remains of an Atlantic sturgeon measuring just over five feet long was found in the salt marsh at the Jones Conservation Lands. COURTESY JIM PARKER When Jim Parker went to the salt marsh on Spring Hill Road, he was expecting to find signs of migrating birds. Instead, he found the remains of a rare Atlantic sturgeon—an endangered sea creature considered to be a living fossil. Mr. Parker said that it was found on Sunday, March 25, in the Jones Conservation Lands, a considerable distance from the shore. “That marsh is subject to tidal flooding, especially during a full moon,” Mr. Parker said. “I had thought that it may have been swimming in the flooded marsh and got beached as the tide water receded.”
