New awards lined up for journalists in Isles
THE Zanzibar committee on media freedom will this year introduce awards for journalists in five different categories as part of honoring the good work that journalists are doing.

The deputy chairperson of the committee Dr Mzuri Issa made the remarks at the department of communication of the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) Kilimani, Unguja in Zanzibar.
He said this year’s celebration will be different as a way of celebrating the good work that journalists are doing.
Among the awards to be given include the blue economy award, Government of National Unity category which has been named the Maalim Seif award.

Masoud Othman Sharif picked Z’bar First VP
ZANZIBAR President Hussein Mwinyi has appointed Masoud Othman Sharif of ACT-Wazalendo as the Isles' new First Vice President to replace Seif Sharif Hamad who died last month.
A statement from the State House in Zanzibar said the appointment of Masoud was in accordance with Article 9 (3) of the Zanzibar Constitution which requires the President to maintain the spirit of the Government of National Unity (GNU).
“By powers vested in him through Article 39(4) of the Zanzibar Constitution of 1984 and after consultations with ACT-Wazalendo, the President of Zanzibar and chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi has appointed Othman Masoud Othman Sharif to be the First Vice President,” the statement reads in part.

‘Peace crucial for investment flows’
ZANZIBAR President Dr Hussein Mwinyi has underscored the need to treasure and maintain peace for investments to keep flowing into the Isles.

Holding talks with Home Affairs minister George Simbachawene, Dr Mwinyi said peace is a major factor considered by investors before deciding to start a business.
"My government will work closely with your ministry to ensure that peace and tranquility continues for not only the good of Zanzibar but Tanzania as a whole," he said.
President Mwinyi who came to office last year after the October General Election told the minister that efforts being made to strengthen peace in the Isles do not go to waste since a number of investors have already inked contracts with his government, and a number of investment deals are still being negotiated.

Tanzanian Ambassador to Nairobi Dr. John Simbachawene temporarily deactivated his Twitter account, @JSimbachawene, a day after he lectured and warned Kenyan journalists against reporting on matters coronavirus pandemic in his country.
During an interview on Tuesday with Tanzania’s EATV, the envoy urged the Kenyan media to publish factual information regarding covid-19 in Tanzania, saying a Kenyan station had reported misleading information on the current situation in the Swahili-speaking country.
The ambassador further requested Tanzanian citizens to take precautions against covid-19 as well as following the health protocols put in place by the Kenyan government on combatting the virus for those who wished to visit Kenya.
