The Summit High School varsity girls volleyball team ended a 1-10 season Tuesday with a home loss to Eagle Valley.
The Tigers lost in straight sets 25-17, 25-17 and 25-15 in the final game for seniors Mackenzie Westenskow, Natalia Flores, Mya Nicholds and Olivia Brewer.
“I told them before the game, ‘Hey, you guys don’t really have anything to lose at this point,’” Tigers head coach Lex Zangari said. “’Just go out, have fun, swing hard and enjoy yourself, because you never know when will be the last time you play.’ And that’s very true, especially this year.”

A lingering knee injury wasn’t going to keep Summit High School volleyball senior Mackenzie Westenskow from not competing at her best on Saturday, April 17.
“She didn’t play like she was hurt,” Tigers head coach and playing alum Lex Zangari said.
On senior day at Summit High School, Westenskow led a collection of fellow seniors and younger up-and-coming players in a gritty effort to a 3-sets-to-1 loss to Central of Grand Junction.

The Summit High School volleyball team found out April 9 that they’d be able to return to practice and competition several days early from a teamwide quarantine.
Summit followed that up with a Tuesday home loss in straight sets to Battle Mountain and then a Thursday 3-1 road victory at Rifle.
Tigers head coach Lex Zangari said Summit High Athletic Director Travis Avery wrote in an email that the early return was thanks to a change in public health guidance specific to the mandatory length of quarantines for certain COVID-19 variants.
The change thrust the volleyball team into a situation where it had one practice before the Tuesday game against the Huskies, which the Huskies won 25-23, 25-12 and 25-16. The Summit High School varsity girls volleyball team saw increased contributions from more players in a 3-0 home loss Tuesday night in Breckenridge versus Glenwood Springs.
The Demons defeated the Tigers 25-22, 25-14 and 25-17 in a contest in which first-year head coach Lex Zangari opted to give more players a chance to contribute to the action than in Summit’s three previous losses to start the season.
“After Saturday, it just kind of seemed like we needed a bit of a reset,” Zangari said about the 0-4 side. “The day before I told the girls, we had a good conversation about the mental aspect to stay invested in the game. The word choice I used was to have the intention to push and keep playing despite making mistakes.”
