A second Trump presidency could tip an already destabilised world over the edge. Our former ambassador to Washington says the UK is running out of time to prepare
trump to ever be president of the united states again. and that's more important than my own personal ambition. i would rather lose by telling the truth than lie in order to win. >> so jeff, i will say i have republican sources who feel like there was a lot of christie egoon display that it wasn't good for the republican party. but i have to say at the end of the day, the decision speaks for itself in it a lot of ways. what do you make of what he had to say there? >> give chris christie a ton of credit. from how he ran his campaign to stepping out when he did, every pitcher starts the game wanting to pitch a complete game, but rarely does that happen. i. hope he stays plugged in and continueses to hold donald trump's feet to the fire. you said this earlier. republicans have fallen in love with donald trump's personality, not his leadership. none of us, even his most ardent
two people were injured in an avalanche in california. it's not clear when the mountain would be able to reopen. a house panel held its first hearing to um peach the homeland security secretary over the border crisis. republicans accuse him of dereliction of duty for the high number of border crossings. and the oregon supreme court set to weigh in on whether donald trump can appear on the ballots as a result of the i insurrectionist ban. trump appealed to the supreme court after he was removed from the ballot in colorado. let's go now to weather. more than 80 million people across the country are bracing for more severe storm threatsen opt the heels of that powerful system that reeked havoc over the last two days. derek, good morning. lots of threats out there today. >> this is a very hyperactive weather pattern. i was in new orleans and panama
the chairman, you asked him to do this. here he is. what do you make of -- this is a particularly impressive media strategy. spear headed by abbi lowell, who is for viewers who don't know, he's a very pugnacious defense attorney in washington, who has a reputation for being successful in what he does. this really take it is head on in a way that honestly if i'm the white house, i'm raising my eyebrows. what did you make of the strategy and how it might play down at the other end of pennsylvania avenue, where his dad is try ining to get reelect president? >> i think pugnacious is the best way to describe it really. it's taking the right to the republicans. it's very aggressive. as you mentioned at the top of this segment, hunter biden is facing a lot of legal issues. i think if you ask sol of advisers of the white house,
biden would show up. when he did, he was mobbed by tv cameras. he actually came in during the middle of the contempt hearing and immediately stole the show. let's take a step back and realize what was going on. the main issue is that republicans want to hear from hunter biden, to ask him whether his father was involved in any of his business dealings. hunter has said i will show up publicly. i don't want to come privately. that might mean my testimony would be leaked or misrepresented, in it his words. and republicans, who say they want to hear from him, have said, no, we're not going to let you dictate this. if you don't come privately, we're going to hold you in contempt of congress. so during all of this, hunter biden decides to show up and almost call prime republicans' . one of them said do you want to hear from hunter. raise your hands. no republicans raised their hand. >> the calling the bluff is very apt way to put it. you heard the democrat say to
europe's problem. why doesn't germany intervene and get involved in that. why is america getting involved in that. and the document or the conversation you just reported on speaks to a similar theme in what he's saying. there are problems in the world, which are america's problems certainly, europe has enough money to be able to sort out sol of these problems on its own. so i think it's interesting. it does reflect concern in europe that if he gets in again, ukraine is going to be a relate issue for them. >> to dig into that a little bit, i think there's definitely an assumption here that if trump were to get reelected, it's very unlikely that the u.s. would continue funding war in ukraine. so much of the antagonism that exists right now in terms of that money is coming from so-called maga republicans in congress, who don't really want to pay for it. i'm curious.
i'm majority of republicans think talk about race and learning about race and school is a good thing. majorities of republicans are not where today's maga republicans are going. and all the things they keep talking about, which begs the question, what the heck are they thinking? >> is it -- rain. >> no don, i call it covid. >> i forget what i'm talk about all the time. >> it's covid thought. >> no, i just forgot what i was going to say. [laughs] >> it is having fun, it's totally okay. but listen, alice says everybody talks about, you know, what trump is doing. but they are not talk about is the accomplishments, i talk to larry summers a little later, about what the current president is doing. and what he's trying to do is highlight his legislative wins. and he is not shying away on taking on trump directly as he is blasting so-called maga republicans in congress. watch this, and we will talk about it. >> the extreme maga republicans in congress have chosen to go backwards full of anger, violence, hate, and division.
