Astronomers have released a new map of the outermost region of our galaxy. Known as a galactic halo, this area lies outside the swirling spiral arms that make up the Milky Way’s recognizable central disk, and is sparsely populated with stars. Though the halo may appear mostly empty, scientists predict it contains a massive reservoir of dark matter, an invisible material thought to make up the bulk of all mass in the universe. The new map, which appears as part of a paper in Nature, reveals h...

A watercolour sky The Atacama Desert in Chile is one of the darkest and most peaceful astronomical sites on Earth — and has, as a result, proven to be the perfect location for ESO’s various observatories and powerful instruments. This view shows ESO’s Paranal Observatory, home to the behemoth Very Large Telescope (VLT). The constituent telescopes of the VLT can be seen standing sentinel beneath a star-studded sky featuring the glittering arch of our Galaxy, and the glowing Magellanic Cl...

Looking up at the starry sky, the deep Universe appears quiet and mysterious. It is hard to imagine ...

Date Time Shape of Star Explosions When massive stars end their lives in fiery explosions called supernovae, their ashes fly outward to form expanding clouds of debris. While these clouds may look roughly spherical, astronomers think that star explosions are in fact lopsided events in which different amounts of material shoot outward in different directions. Now, astronomers have a new tool to better understand the asymmetrical shapes of supernova explosions, and thus how stars explode in the f...

The mission, which is made up of two satellites, imaged the tiny island for Valentines Day. Valentine Island is just about 1 mile (1.60 kilometers) long and 0.15 miles (250 meters) wide and can be found in the King Sound, a large gu...
