New Jersey has become the second state that will require K-12 schools to teach Asian American and Pacific Islander history.

New Jersey is now the second state to mandate AAPI history be added to the curriculum for K-12 students, as Gov. Phil Murphy signed the new legislation into state law on Tuesday. The bills will add an Asian American and Pacific Islander history requirement in the curriculum, and establish a Commission for Asian American Heritage in the state's Department of Education.

The Jersey City Council passed a resolution seeking to include Asian American Pacific Islander studies in New Jersey public schools.

“It is a growing community that has often been ignored and neglected, and we want to change that,” said Rep. Anna Eskamani, D-Orlando.

'It’s not something that’s just progressive — it’s necessary.'

The bills, HB 281 and SB 490, were intended to better represent understanding of Asian American & Pacific Islanders in statewide lesson plans in American history.
