This hour, we sit down with Hartford luminary Brother Carl Hardrick at the new Institute for Violence Prevention and Community Engagement in his name. COMPASS Youth Collaborative also joins.
A new fund at Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has given out its first grant to the Brother Carl Hardrick Institute, which is aimed at training people to engage in violence intervention in the city.
With 35 homicides as of mid-December, 2021 has been an exceptionally deadly year for Hartford. Homicides increased 40% from 2020, when the year ended with 25 murders. In fact, the capital city had more killings this year than it had in more than a decade.
A dozen people in Hartford start their training as professional violence intervention workers next month through a new institute inspired by Carl Hardrick, the stand-in grandfather of countless North End youth and an unrivaled force in the city’s fight against gun violence.
