Microsoft releases final Windows 10 Iron build to Insiders in the Dev Channel

Build 20279 is now available in the Dev Channel. It s the last fe release build Insiders will need to test. It has no fixes or changes, just known issues. Microsoft has released a new build to Insiders in the Dev Channel this week, and it s likely to be the last from the Iron fe release branch that has had very little in it in the last few weeks. For those unaware, Iron is the codename for the 21H1 release of Windows, but it won t be coming to Windows 10 desktop. It s a release for Windows 10X and Windows Server 2021 only. That s why the fe release builds have essentially had nothing in them, because all the work going on for Windows 10 Iron releases is happening on entirely different versions of the OS. Microsoft is finalizing Windows 10X (and ultimately, the Iron codebase) with build 20279, so they ve been pumping out bug fixes and changes big time internally, but none of that really translates to the desktop builds.

Microsoft: This new Windows 10 preview is just to test how quickly we can issue builds

We wanted to test our ability to quickly follow up a flight with another flight, Microsoft Windows Insider program manager Brandon LeBlanc noted in a blogpost. The latest preview today is from the Iron (Fe) branch and contains very few changes to preview build 20277 that it flighted last week to users in the Dev Channel. At the same time last week, it released RS Prerelease build 21277, which is expected to be designated as the Cobalt branch and could arrive in the second half of 2021. The company had introduced Snip & Sketch, but Snipping Tool continues to be shipped with the modern versions of the operating system. With last week s Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 21277 for Dev Channel, the company confirmed that Insiders will now be able to uninstall the Snipping Tool. Windows 10 will allow you to reinstall it via the Optional Features page in the Settings app should you want to use it again. This ability would eventually trickle down to the public versions with the future Windows 10 releases.
