The 6,000-person town of Pembroke Park may be considering rehiring the Broward Sheriff's Office for police services, less than a year after it created its own police force to cut down on costs.
It was because of money that Pembroke Park decided to ditch its relationship with the Broward Sheriff's Office in what was supposed to be a cost-cutting move. Now, the police chief has been fired.
Pembroke Park officials are acknowledging they aren't sure how they spent $2.3 million in federal loan money they took out 14 years ago. That loan wound up costing taxpayers $3.5 million with interest. They are now in the process of hiring a forensic auditor to help figure it out.
