YOURSAY | Politics, education, sports - sexism permeates our society

Manjit Bhatia: I don't think religion alone is contributing to the viciously sexist comments by morons targeting women in general and those in the news specifically, such as Olympian gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi.
Religion may warp one’s sanity and promote racism and bigotry but look at the education system. It is revolting, by and large. Its aim is to indoctrinate and create unthinking, unimaginative zombies to extract compliance and conformity, just as mass religion does.
The other problem is the feudal nature of not just one ethnic group but all ethnic groups in Malaysia, from which spring nasty and oppressive patriarchal attitudes and practices that culminate in state-level patrimonialism.

Manjit Bhatia: Political scientist Wong Chin Huat said: "To break the stalemate without breaking democracy, there are only two realistic solutions: first, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin reaching out to the opposition, whether Pakatan Harapan, Warisan or other minor parties for a Confidence and Supply Agreement (CSA) to secure a comfortable majority that enables governance.
“Second, Umno reaching out to Harapan to gather a positive majority and go to the palace."
Forget the second option. It's a long shot. Too long, too desperate and too many "voters" will read it for what it is not.

YOURSAY | 'If the 'joke' is not funny, it isn't. Ain Husniza deserves to be taken seriously.'
VioletCamel2167: Ain Husniza Saiful Nizam, you are such an inspiration. Power and kudos to you and your family.
We need more people like you who will stand up for important issues in the community and beat back the naysayers who are not moving with evolution.
The PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police) response categorising it as a possible joke is despicable and unprofessional - at least you have exposed the complete lack of awareness and expertise in this area of public concerns (despite all the learning and training all these years).

The Wakandan: Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, your explanation does not wash and I am not prejudiced against you.
I think it made sense that you chose Zeti Akhtar Aziz because she was a well-known banker. That’s a good reason for her to be one of the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP).
Similarly, you got economist Jomo Kwame Sundaram, former finance minister Daim Zainuddin and tycoon Robert Kuok in the team, all having some outstanding economic background.
But you are an intelligent person. The fact that Zeti did not act against then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak even though she allegedly knew the irregularities, would immediately disqualify her to be a member of CEP, which was an important post that you created to advise you and the nation.

Straight Citizen: Dear historian Ranjit Singh Malhi, thank you for writing this article.
In all honesty, I haven't felt so sick in the gut and in the heart from just reading an opinion piece for some time. To see the Indians and Chinese history in this beautiful country we call home being systematically and deliberately wiped off our history pages really brings grief to our hearts.
None of us ever denied the importance and the pre-eminence of the Malays in this country but certainly isn't there a place to objectively record how we developed as a nation together? We respectfully studied Sejarah Dunia in Form 4 back in my schooling days and learnt Islamic history without any qualms. We still had that

Milshah: Malaysiakini columnist Mariam Mokhtar made a good attempt of describing how a new Malaysia should be, like many other political strategists and commentators.
She suggested for Umno’s Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin to form a multiracial party of his own. However, the party will lose big in the elections for it does not have support in the rural areas.
This is the same problem faced by multiracial parties like DAP and PKR, and they have been in politics longer. The urban areas are already controlled by DAP and PKR.
