people just joining us. this is what happened. a man driving on independence, that s right next to capitol hill, capitol hill police say tried to run into a capitol police cruiser and tried repeatedly to run over capitol police officers this morning. now, this man is now in custody. he was apprehended just a few blocks away. there were reports of shots fired and as you can see you are looking at live pictures of the scene right now. it is a secure area. no one was injured as of now that we can tell in this incident and we did get to hear from manu raju inside the capitol. no additional security measures taking there. for at least some people up in that area it s business as usual even though you see the security outside. who was apprehended? was this individual alone? that is the report, was there one individual apprehended. do we know if there s anyone else?
cruisers. you see the botanical gardens there for people who know the area. but as manu has reported there are tourists coming inside and out and lawmakers are going about their day and no shelter in place warning inside the capit capitol. we have the director of the u.s. marshal s office, manu brought up a good point and that is that they already have heightened security in and around the capitol when congress is in session. what would they have there on a normal day in terms of increased security? generally what you see if you re familiar with the area is you have capitol police officers actually standing on the street and as you can see from the pictures you re showing there there are also barricades that can be activated at any given point and time to secure that area, and there s a way to secure the area around the
quick u-turn not far away from me just over my left shoulder on independence avenue and first streets and that s where shots were fired and the driver was stopped somehow. i m going to let our photojournalist kind of zoom in here to where the vehicle is being processed. there was no one injured and this was according to eva malecki, the private information officer for capitol police. we asked what the nature of the shots were, were they shots to disable the vehicle or shots to warn the driver. she did not answer that question and walked away. we do know that the driver is a woman, that the driver is in custody and what is very important to note ask there is no nexus to terrorism at the moment that capitol hill police are aware of. that is according to eva malecki, the public information officer that briefed all of us. it s early in the investigation. there s probably a lot more detail yet to in, but the important thing here is right now is that the driver s in
state, you do see heightened concern with people using vehicles as weapons and this, they re saying, no nexus to terrorism and apparently striking or coming close to striking several officers and then during the attempted arrest there were shots fired. we are joined by jonathan law enforcement analyst and former secret service officer. thanks so much for being with us. obviously, security around the capitol always very, very tight. you can understand why there was this concern when they saw as capitol police say this morning, this driver driving e rateclyrr on independence after and then pulling the u-turn, correct? the moment this incident happened, no onknew if this was a potential terrorist attack or criminal in nature. these incidents are dynamic and they fall very quickly and officers have to rely on their training and tactics to mitigate the threat that s in front of
capitol. you have capitol police and this is capitol police s jurisdiction and you also have park police and you have metropolitan pd, and i m sure the fbi and atf are responding due to the fact that this was shots fired. also, i work for homeland security for about six years and that s the agency on the federal law enforcement training center which actually trained with the capitol police and the initial report of warning shots being fireside not any part of law enforcement training and that type of warning shot issue went out in the mid-90s. i think more than likely they were engaging this individual directly as opposed to firing warning shots. i think that s an important point to make and the words warning shots was something used by the metropolitan police. we have no idea if they were warning shots to try to apprehend the man who they say was trying to drive into capitol police. let me reset for a second for
