Michigan’s manufacturing workforce, which stood at 622,800 at the end of 2019, plummeted to 402,500 in April of 2020, just a month after pandemic-related lockdowns began, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics. It has since rebounded to 610,400.

A new report from Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute takes a look at the ongoing skills gap in manufacturing, an issue that persisted despite high unemployment rates during the pandemic.
The 2021 Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute Manufacturing Talent study found that there are expected to be 2.1 million unfilled manufacturing jobs in the U.S. by 2030. And it s not just a future problem. The report found that 77% of the manufacturers surveyed expected ongoing difficulties in attracting and retaining workers in 2021 and beyond.
