A mission from NASA has discovered there may be a lot fewer galaxies than initially believed, opening up the possibility humanity is alone in the universe.

As one of the authors of the new study has explained, the focus of their attention, the so called cosmic optical background, essentially “puts a constraint on the total...

There may be fewer galaxies in the universe than we thought CNN 1/13/2021 By Ashley Strickland, CNN © Zolt Levay/Space Telescope Science Institute This photo shows a phenomenon known as zodiacal light. At lower left, a glowing patch extends to the upper right in the direction of Jupiter, the bright object left of center. Zodiacal light is caused by sunlight reflecting off tiny dust particles in the inner solar system—the disintegrated remains of comets and asteroids. Atte...

The mystery surrounding the whereabouts of a supermassive black hole has deepened, researchers say. Despite searching with NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers have no evidence that a distant black hole estimated to weigh between 3 billion and 100 billion times the mass of the sun is anywhere to be found. This missing black hole should be in the enormous galaxy in the center of the galaxy cluster Abell 2261, which is located about 2.7 billion light-years fr...

This missing black hole should be in the enormous galaxy in the center of the galaxy cluster [3] Abell 2261, which is located about 2.7 billion light years [4] from Earth. This composite image of Abell 2261 contains optical data from Hubble and the Subaru Telescope showing galaxies in the cluster ...

But that is what a band of astronomers has discovered, using cameras on the New Horizons spacecraft that once visited Plu...

Astronomers using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory are searching for signs of a recoiling black hole in the core of A2261-BCG, the most massive and brightest galaxy in the giant galaxy cluster Abell 2261. This image of Abell 2261, a galaxy cluster located 3 billion light-years away, contain X-ray data from Chandra showing hot gas pervading the cluster as well as optical data from Hubble and the Subaru Telescope that show galaxies in the cluster and in the background. A2261-BCG (center), also ...

Ramin Skibba, Contributor (Inside Science) -- For decades, even before the iconic Hubble telescope took flight, astronomers have been launching spacecraft into orbit in the hopes of avoiding atmospheric effects that blur images taken by telescopes on Earth. But to catch clear signals of some cosmic objects, even those orbits aren’t high enough. A group of astronomers now make the case for assembling and planting telescopes on the moon. In a series of newly published papers, they argue that ou...

Outer space just got a little brighter © Jagyaseni Biswas Outer space just got a little brighter The universe is a shade too bright. That might be the last news you expected to hear toward the darkening end of a dark year. But that is what a band of astronomers has discovered, using cameras on the New Horizons spacecraft that once visited Pluto to measure the darkness of interplanetary space. “There’s something out there unknown,” said Tod Lauer, of the National Optical-Infrared Astron...
