Public health officials in Dane County have issued almost $200,000 in fines to businesses and individuals violating Dane County public health orders since last summer, a records request filed with Public Health Madison and Dane County shows. Businesses are on the hook for more than $50,000 of that, while individuals charged with violations for group gatherings face another $137,000 in maximum fines–before court fees. Forty people are facing violations of the large gathering part of the order in court, with gatherings ranging from a few to more than 100 people, according to records. An Oregon dance studio has joined an existing lawsuit against Public Health Madison & Dane County days after the agency cited the studio for violating mass gathering limits. A complaint, filed by public health, alleges that 119 people were somehow involved or in attendance of this performance, which violated Emergency Order #10, the public health order that was in place at that time. The order banned mass gatherings of any size, defining a mass gathering as “a planned event with a large number of individuals in attendance, such as a concert, festival, meeting, training, conference, performance, show or sporting event.”
