tuesday after next, when both democrats face a do or die test in the new york primary. and this one actually is do or die. if hillary holds on, she keeps -- actually keeps sanders from keeping her in delegates. if hillary loses, however, all hell will break lose. how can they nominate someone in philadelphia, when they lost their house in new york. sanders attacked clinton's chief -- her readiness for the job of the here is sanders. >> she has been saying lately that she thinks that i am quote-unquote not qualified to be president. let me just say in response to secretary clinton, i don't believe that she is qualified. i don't think that you are qualified if you get $15 million from wall street through your super pac. i don't think you are qualified if you have voted for the disastrous war in iraq. i don't think you are qualified if you're supported virtually every disastrous trade agreement which has cost us millions of descent paying jobs. >> well, that attack elicited an immediate response from brian fallon, who said hillary clinton did not say bernie sanders was not qualified, but he has now absurdly said it about her. this is a new low. fallon also asked sanders to recant his statement, saying, quote, bernie sanders take back your words about hillary clinton. but sanders did not back off. instead, he cited the "washington post" headline that evidence that clinton attacked him first and then double down this morning. >> when you have headlines in the "washington post," quote, clinton questions whether sanders is qualified to be president, my response is, well, you know, if you want to question my qualifications, let me suggest this. that maybe the american people might wonder about your qualifications, madam secretary. if secretary clinton thinks that i just come from the small state of vermont, we're not used to it, we'll get used to it. i'm not going to get beaten up or lied about. >> wow. in response, pointing out that clinton did not call him unqualified. sanders is putting words in clinton's mouth that he was not qualified to be president. he can't slam her for words she did not say. i'm joined by susan page, washington borrow chief, and steve mcmahon. i brought you in here to try to figure this out. the chief thing going on here is they both need to win new york. >> it's important. it's important. you know what, there is no iowa nice in new york. new york is happy to have really rough and tumble politics and that's what we're going to see. >> we talked about before, maybe you can't be as definitive on the air, but it seems to me, if hillary clinton loses her home state, what happens? >> if she loses her home state, it's not mathematically, how strong a candidate would she be. >> if he loses. >> he is already not in a good position. that would put him in a worst position. it doesn't mean he'll get out. he will stay in until the end. she'll be back on track. >> i think it's got the new york residents. if you play for a new york sports team, it's coming out of new york. if bernie wins new york, it's a blockbuster. >> he is already ready to pass her nationally in the numbers. >> no question about that. also this delegate math that has an overwhelming advantage for hillary clinton, and that doesn't change whether he wins or not, because of proportional representation rules. he'll get huge momentum, probably nobody $50 million raised, and well-funded, but that doesn't mean the super delegates, who have worked with the clintons for a long time and just met bernie sanders this year are going to flip absent some compelling reason. >> the reason i think it's going to be the big one, hillary clinton starting two or three days ago, after you know, losing in wisconsin, has begun to realize, she has to beat this guy. she can't play with him any more. he ain't going away. she jumped into the new york daily news interview about how to get rid of the big banks, she jumped on it and say this is an example he doesn't know what he is talking about. i'm talking about bernie, quotes, headlines in, air quotes. she is saying i did not say that. why did she say that? >> here is the thing. if he hadn't done quote-unquote, and saying, he could be on more solid ground. if he said suggesting, because she did suggest. she refused to say he was unqualified. it was up to the voters. >> on morning joe, she wouldn't say it, but what she's saying is this guy is not what he claims to be, and the low information voter is falling for it is basically her words. >> the first is, any time we're talking about qualifications and experience, that benefits hillary clinton. any time bernie sanders is talking about that, that benefits hillary clinton. she won't say that he is unqualified. >> is she gets at his age? >> she is getting -- is she getting at his age. >> i think she's getting at the fact that -- democratic socialist, that he has -- >> not a democratic. >> small state, hasn't done much. >> why is she afraid to slam him like most politicians. trump sees somebody, he calls them little marco or big ears. >> you see the exit polls and what is happening she is getting destroyed with young voters, and she needs all those people and come back to the general election. she is actually straddling this very nicely. at the same time, she won't say he is qualified. let me put it another way. i would vote for him. she is triangulated this thing. >> i could beat a guy without beating him. i don't know how you beat somebody without beating them. >> i think she didn't realize until recently how serious this challenge was. she thought it would go away by now. >> republicans made the same mistake with trump. they thought they would ignore him, would he go away, bernie would be a back bench. >> the delegate math isn't there. >> they don't want to hear about it. >> what he needs to do, he needs to move it for most of the primary away from the question of experience and qualifications and over to the question of judgment. which is what he was trying to do there with his rhetorical quotes. >> he has done that before. >> if he is arguing about whether she is qualified, he is losing. if he is arguing about her judgment. >> judgment right on a like, in taking the -- what is it, $600,000 from goldman sachs for speaking fees. >> that's when he is at his best as a candidate. this thing about whether he is -- when he is arguing about qualifications is crazy. >> the beat goes on. hillary clinton reacted to the attack on her qualifications for office in an interview on "today". >> he doesn't think you're qualified to be president. >> well, that will be up to the voters of new york, and the other states that will be passing judgment in the weeks ahead. i think it's kind of a silly statement, but he is free to say whatever he chooses. >> he is qualified to be president. >> here is what i believe. i believe that voters will be looking at both of us, but i will take bernie sanders over donald trump or ted cruz any time. >> she is thinking of november, right. >> she should do the same thing he is doing. we have a totally different vision from where we should take the country. >> neither of them do that. >> hillary is something wrong to say there is something wrong with the socialist view. what's wrong with his view, if you ask her. >> it's not about whether or not he has progressive views, he clearly does. >> what's wrong with the way -- how can she say i don't like the way -- >> he is qualified to be the president. he is part of washington. he hasn't done the kinds of things, he doesn't have the kind of experience, he hasn't done this, and this, and this, which i have. >> you know what bernie will say, you took us to the war. >> bill clinton's exchange. >> any response to bernie sanders saying hillary clinton is not qualified? so silly. about what he said? what's your response, is he qualified? >> talk about pushy, that guy was literally in his face. she is more qualified than i ever was. >> he did. >> it's much better than lashing out. he looks and says she is so qualified. so ready. and why we can't put this guy away is absolutely beyond him, obviously. >> and they haven't been able to put him away. he generates more enthusiasm. democratic primary so far have supported him, not her. that's an amazing number. a number she has to address. >> she can't beat him down and she can't snack him down. she needs those people. if the republicans nominate trump, she may not need -- >> let's talk about this. look how great it is for bernie, though. he is brooklyn. he has the manner. he has it cold. it's shtick, it's great. he has a passion. he puts on, i'm not demeaning it, a show. >> he does. >> hillary clinton doesn't. >> he did. it was classic brooklyn. >> you don't go see a hillary clinton speech to get excited. you maybe learn some things. >> the debate will be in brooklyn, she is sort of in a -- she has come to new york, but you know what, he'll see like the mets. she'll look like the yankee. come on, brooklyn wins. >> you think i'm stupid, you're stupider. that's what is going on right now. >> joe pesci. >> she's unqualified. >> he doesn't know what a token is. he thinks they're still using tokens. we're talking like this now. thank you, susan. round one. we've got 14 rounds to go. donald trump pinning his rebound, new york mayor, america's mayor, rudy giuliani supporting trump. the battle, how will it hurt hillary clinton come november. the round table here tonight, with something i don't know about. any way, this wild presidential race as we head into the new york primary, as we said. finally, let me finish with a presidential contest that has narrowed to a narrow multiple choice. no more free choice. just multiple choice. this is "hardball," the place for politics. we needed 30 new hires for our call center. i'm spending too much time hiring and not enough time in my kitchen. world renowned pianist. you grew up in the south. that was you playing now. the other night i said, i don't understand all this rural thing. i'm a suburban city guy. what is it that you know that i don't know that led to -- you wrote this book about marie hall, a portrait painter who in the earlier part of the 20th century was making beautiful portraits of african-american people, a white woman. >> all kinds of people. she painted african-americans and white people and rich people and treated everybody equally. she did that in the 1930s. she was a visionary. there was something she grew up in small town, a rural town. i'm from the mississippi delta. it's bit north of there. that's the farming area of the mississippi river. something about growing up in a small town, every one knows every one. class is much less delineated than people think. >> there's the person with the house on the hill, the money person. >> that exists and existed. even so, people all talk to one another and in order for communities like that to function, you have to talk to people. when you talk to people, you get to know them. that reenforces values. it's a sense of community. also a sense of caring about "all in" chris hayes starts now. tonight on all in. >> if i'm going to be attacked for being unqualified, i'll respond in quiet. >> the democratic race becomes an unqualified brawl. >> look, i don't know why he's saying that. >> secretary clinton responds and the sanders camp escalates. >> really made a deal with the deal and the devil wants his due. >> what this fight means for bernie versus hillary. why bill clinton's clash with protesters could have major impact on the race. >> donald trump gets series about the delegate race, but is he too late. as with uncandidate gets the meat sweats.
