Car show raises over $1,000 for Pittsylvania County nonprofit

CHATHAM, Va. — A Grace A LOT-sponsored car show fundraiser raised $1,028 on a Sunday, April 26 event. The fundraiser supported Chatham’s Grace A LOT, a local nonprofit that runs a popular area clothes closet. The event was held at Marion Baptist Church.  “It was a beautiful day for a car show,” Pastor Hank Meadows of Marion Baptist Church said. “We are thrilled to raise over $1,000 for Grace A LOT. Grace A LOT volunteers need our ongoing support. COVID-19 has made fundraising challenging. Our car show today allowed people to be socially distant, support a great local cause, and enjoy the day.”

days. high pressure parked off the east coast and corresponding winds out of the south and west and that will continue to pump in the very unseasonably cold air. this is typically our hottest time of year. and with very slow weather pattern to change here, we're talking about heat the next couple of days before the things start to get better next week. 98 this afternoon. sunshine, a lot of sunshine, and humidity, 98 is a tie for a record high. and i'll have more details on the forecast coming up in a minute. >> tucker, thank you very much. and our top story this morning, police say this is the face of a serial killer wanted for five murders in the midwest and now he may be attacking people in our area. police say the same suspect in a deadly crime spree in michigan could also be linked to an attack in ohio and the more in leesberg, virginia. >> the most recent case happened last friday and fox 5's sarah simmons is live in leesberg with more details. sarah, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tony and allison. leesberg police believe this is a racially motivated issue and a racially-motivated crime. that this man appears to be targeting black males. and it looks as though he's probably linked to several of those stabbings, as you mentioned, in michigan and then one in ohio just this past saturday. now here is a description of the suspect. this was released last week in michigan. police released it. but it is the same description as here in leesberg of this suspect. a white male, with a muscular build. witnesses here in leesberg say he's about 6 feet tall. investigators say the man stabbed two people and attacked another with a hammer on the streets of leesberg, starting last tuesday. the latest attack though, was on friday. and two of the people are still in the hospital. police believe the same man stabbed 13 people around flint, michigan, over the past couple of months, five of them died. witnesses say the vehicle he was driving in michigan is similar to the one you can see here. it's a 1995-2000 chevy blazer, two-tone, dark green on the top and a beige or white bottom. and it is similar, this is not the exact vehicle we are talking about here. they are still trying to figure out why he chose leesberg. they simply don't know. but residents and police are definitely on the lookout. >> i don't know where this guy is. he might as well be like the sniper in d.c. because he just jumps out of nowhere and stabs people for no reason. >> we have no information at this point to say he's either still here or he has fled. we are continuing our operations as if he is still here. >> reporter: and police are telling me they have continued to step up patrols, adding additional officers to the shifts as wellch and from what we understand, they also have installed cameras in certain parts of the city in hopes of tracking anything down that may look suspicious. back to you tony and allison. >> this case was disturbing to begin with and now with the connections to ohio and michigan, even more so. thank you very much, sarah. maryland, where a judge denied bail for the man and woman charged with killing two women and children -- young children, execution styles. the victims bodies for found in lanham last friday. suspect, darrell bellard and t'keisha gilmer confessed and they are believed to be drug occuryers from -- couriers from texas and killed the people when they didn't get money from them. chief lan year was following concerns following a massive brawl that began at the gallery place metro stop. four people were hurt and three teens were arrested after 70 people -- or person fight spilled to the l'enfant plaza station. metro transit police are viewing video and d.c. police will step up patrols but only if they ask for it. the ntsb met with metro's board of directors yesterday. the leaders discussed the ntsb findings and safety recommendations in response to last year's deadly crash on the redline. gurvir dhindsa is following the story for us this morning. >> reporter: tony, this was an unprecedented meeting. never before has the board sat down with the leaders of a local transit agency. it's following safety representations related -- recommendations related to the crash on the redline where nine people died. they found metro's ineffective safety over site was a factor and the attitude toward safety. the ntsb said there needs to be a culture where employees can report problems without fear of retaliation and feel confident concerns will be heard. deborah hersman came away with from the meeting -- from the meeting with optimism. >> this afternoon demonstrated the metro board to listen to the board's recommendation and already today we've heard a number of commitments about progress that will be meet on ntsb recommendations. this is an excellent opportunity for a frank and honest and open -- dialogue and i think every rider about benefit from it. >> peter sarles said the agency is committed to following the ntsb recommendations. they said metro was making changes before the ntsb report was released last month but he does caution that the time some actions will take cannot be hurried. >> one of the recommendations was our very oldest rail cars that constitute about a quarter of our fleet, so that's a lot of people who ride in those during the rush hour, are ones that the national transportation safety board deemed to be unsafe and said we should withdraw them and remace them as soon as possible. we have already ordered the replacement cars. that's something the board did a couple of months ago. and those are on order but it will take three years or so before they arrive because you don't go to your local dealer and get one off the lot, they have to be built. >> and mr. benjamin told us this morning that metro is still safer than if thousands of passengers stopped riding and got into cars instead. he said that accidents involving vehicles are much more common than those on metro. >> very good. >> back over to the two of you. >> thank you very much. and we want to mention that deborah hersman was supposed to have joined us at this time for an interview but she's had to cancel to travel to investigate a plane crash in alaska this morning. eight people were on plane when it went down last night near dillingham, about 325 miles south of anchorage. we don't know yet if there are any survivors. today is decision day as voters in four key states vote if primary elections and colorado's senate race, bill clinton is supporting romanoff and president obama has made appearances for michael bennett. linda mcmahon spent $22 million on her campaign and is mazied to vince mcmahon. georgia is holding a runoff and minnesota is holding the first ever primary election in august. president obama is now if full campaign mode but is he helping or hurting fellow democrats. as doug luzader reports now, the campaigner and chief is trying to rally his party. >> reporter: the president still does well at political fundraising but also facing a popularity problem. >> thank you, everybody. >> reporter: there is no question that the president can whip up a crowd. >> hello, austin. [ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: the white house has the president on double duty, like yesterday when his education speech at the university of texas was quickly followed by a party fundraiser with mid-term elections right around the corner. >> now we have three months to go and so we've decided, well we can politic for three months, they've forgotten i know how to politic very good. >> reporter: but when the president arrived in texas, he was greeted by the republican governor, whose democratic opponent was nowhere to be seen. >> when barack obama shows up in your state he has air force one and basically bringing washington to the rescue. and if you're a democrat right now, you don't want washington coming to the et cetera coup. >> reporter: democratic candidates in close rates are happy to have the president open wallets and he's been effective as a fundraiser, ririe lying on -- relying on beating up on the bush administration. >> i know republicans say he just wants to bash the previous administration and he's looking to -- backwards, trying to not take the -- take the focus off the tough economic sut eyation that's a lot of people are feeling. no, no, no, the reason we're focused on it is because the other side isn't offering anything new. >> reporter: and we'll get some idea how all of this is playing out today. there are statewide elections in four states. connecticut, colorado, minnesota and georgia. in washington, doug luzader, fox news. it is a realignment of defense funds. >> and the budget changes at the pentagon could leave thousands of virginians out of a job. we'll complain. plus kids don't just seem to good growing up faster, according to a new study, they actually are. some girls hitting puberty as early as 7 or 8 years old. we'll talk with a doctor next about the dangers of such development. we'll be back in a moment. it's 9:10. ten term california congresswoman maxine waters is formally facing charges from a ethics panel. she's accused of three counts of breaking u.s. house rules for helping a bank in which her husband was a stockholder get access to top treasury officials. she's denied the charges. this is another blow to democrats. charlie rangel is also facing charges from the house ethics panel. virginia is going to lose thousands of jobs with the pentagon's new budget cuts. the defense secretary robert gates is slashing the defense budget by $100 billion over the next five years. the biggest single cut is shutting down the joint forces command in norfolk, virginia. nearly 6,000 people work there. gates said he recognizes the pain this will cause for some families. >> i know these changes will likely mean real hardship for displaced employees and their families. i expect this effort to recommend cutting at least 50 general and flag officer positions and 150 senior and civilian executive positions over the next two years. >> mark warner issued a statement saying, quote, i can see no national basis for dismantling jf com and forcing more cooperation among sometimes competing military services. allison. many parents say their kids grow up so fast and they are right. according to a new study, more and more girls are hitting puberty at a very early age. joining us live in studio this morning to talk about perhaps why is dr. paul gundtoff he is the director of the fertility center at the george washington medical facility associates and we appreciate you joining us this morning. >> thank you, allison. >> we've all noticed this, especially parents of girls, that it seems our girls are reaching puberty and by that some breast development and other thing that's go along with puberty earlier. we're talking about a study that came out that said as early as 7 years old. what are the headlines? and this is nothing new to you. you've written papers about this some two decades ago. >> right. >> now it's coming out. what do you have to say about the study and what do parents need to know or hear about this? >> i think there are two issuesch one is it's really happening and the second is what does the study or the impact of the study? and there is definitely a decrease in the age of the onset of puberty. and puberty is a dynamic process and it's not just one event. there is breast changes, the onset of menses, growth spurts, pubic hair development and all of the things are happening in a sequence. and the onset of the sequence begins with a combination of growth changes and breast budding. but the beginning of menstruation is the hallmark of puberty. and studies in the literature are there for over 100 years, there is the compilation of data showing that the age of the onset of menstrual cycles is beginning earlier and earlier. for example 100 years ago the average age was 17, now it's about 11 for the onset of menstruation. and breast budding occurs approximately one and a half to two years earlier than that. so by scrap race -- scrap olation, it is normal, but the average is changing and that's been changing. if you look at the curves over the past 50 years, there is a drop and then there is a plateau and then a drop again. i think perhaps we've been in a plateau for the last 10-15 years and now we're observing another swall decrease again in age. and it's absolutely due to our environment, our nutrition, the body mass index. it's segway perfectly with our first lady michelle obama's chi and the concerns she's bringing to our attention. >> the author said they couldn't pinpoint any one thing but did cite what you were saying. he's talking more about genes and the environment being a factor. you have talked about the -- what you just said, the first lady's pet project, childhood obesity is lending itself to this? >> that is the main variable. if you look at the study just released, there was a -- excuse me -- there was an increase in the mass index, in the body mass index in the girls who began to men straight or had onset of budding earlier. so it's related to the bmi, body mass index. >> some things we can control. we can control the exercise and foods our kids eat, but if this is happening now, already, nature has already started to take its course. and i would imagine. and what advice would you give parents of girls who are experiencing this way too early? >> well if you look at the physiology of puberty, one begins puberty because the brain turns on the pitu terri gland, which in turn stimulates the ovary and that will allow menstruation to occur. the key is that the brain is under the influence of the environment and neurotransmitters change in the brain by environmental stress, exercise and nutrition. so we're back to our environment. the trigger points are set differently. there is a critical weight and height that every young girl has to meet to start men strew ating. and they can start that early. and the bmi, mass index, is reached earlier in our young adults, our children, simply because they are not exercising enough, they are more sedentary, more fat is in the diet, childhood obesity is an ep dep -- epidemic. >> and the down side of dealing with all of this at an extremely young age is there are higher risk factors for things like breast cancer and depression because a young child is not equipped to of other peopling thinking of them older, there is a cause and effect, chain reaction and how we can re -- prevent it. >> and if you look historically, there has been a change in puberty for over 100 years before changes in our environment with toxins, with plastic bottles, with chemicals, with herbs, with supplements, even with the fat content in our diet. and it's about nutrition. nutrition helps move the age down from 17 to 11. now it's moving lower. now we're seeing a potential issue, we have to end it there, doctor. it's hard to know what to do but at least we know why it's happening. thank you. >> thank you for having me on. >> tony oar -- over to you. one woman, the extreme she went to when a mcdonald's couldn't deliver her mcnuggets. plus holly is going green by working out. holly. >> reporter: i know, as if one workout is enough. we're doing two this morning. we've moved over to a spinning class. and anybody can do a regular spinning class, tony. we are doing a green spinning class where they are literally turning calories into kilowatts. we'll explain live from the washington sports club in columbia heights later. we have a big-ticket giveaway. five pairs of tickets to see the jonas brothers with demi lovato. answer the trivia question on your screen. kevin jonas goes by his middle name. so what is his first name? then i think you already know the answer, which means no? right? to me a haller of famer, russ grimm, four superbowl titles. emmitt smith, jerry rice has broken just about every receiving record you can ask to break and he's done that and so therefore i say right now the body of work for one d. mcnabb is not enough to get him into the hall. good resume, five nfc title appearances and one superbowl appearance and no wins. but i think, tony, it's still incomplete. he can still get there, but if you're asking me right now, erica, i would say no, he's not a hall of famer. if we wins one superbowl, you put him in. he has great numbers. but he still has to win. i know dan moreno is in and he didn't win a superbowl. i don't think the careers are parallel right now. you can't make that that's a trick question. >> i ain't going to say nothing about that. >> all-star cast. we didn't talk about them. a nice, diverse cast. i don't do that for everybody. if you need somebody to show you around d.c. today, i'm your girl. >> all right. on the air, cool. >> so i can't take it back. tip t.i. harris and idris elba. the movie is out on friday. it's all over the television and the trailer too so go and see it. >> never showed me around washington. thank you very much, allison. looks like a great movie too. the washington sports club in columbia heights is going green and holly morris is there to learn about the new cycling equipment which converts human effort into clean renewable energy. holly? >> reporter: well for some reason i feel like a hamster in a science experiment, but nonetheless i think they are turning calories into kilowatts. this is the only location in the city where they have its green revolution. and the leader of the revolution is chandra brown. chandra, come on over here. how are you? >> good, how are you? >> reporter: i'm doing very well. this is my second workout of the day. i did the jersey shore and now this. >> that sounds good. >> reporter: how do you think this is going to be compare? >> i think this will be fine. >> reporter: i think i need to do it because one of the trainers came up and asked, he said, now, do you work out? do i work out? that's something not to ask a woman. so i'm doing my second one. so tell me about the green revolution. i think we're having audio problems. do you know what that has to do with? before we were so rudely interrupted, tell me about the green revolution. >> reporter: why don't you run and turn the stereo off because i think our equipment is interfering with your equipment. so turn that down. and now come back and tell me about the green revolution and we'll try this. >> all right. >> reporter: i have another idea. let's do this, because i think maybe the problem has to be with every time our camera comes closer so let's show this bike instead. see how we adjust on the fly. maybe not. maybe you can show a bike over there. no, mike, you say with me. this is how it will work. if you stay with me and mike you go and show a bike over there, i think when you come closer to us, you're the problem. okay. so you explain this bike and he'll show that bike over there how it works. >> so this is called green revolution and creates renewable energy for the environment and reduced the carbon footprint and you have this panel here which you use to increase and decrease resistance for the bike. >> reporter: so you see the start button and then there is a dimmer button below in case w seeing what you are doing. >> that's correct. >> reporter: and then the increase to increase the intensity. >> that's right. >> reporter: is this helping to power the gym? >> yes. the energy that is produced goes into this grid in the corner and converts back out into the gym. >> reporter: so now we're not only working out, we're helping the environment, we're helping all of those people out there working out. so if you don't have enough spin classes, does everything go dark? >> no, it does not. >> reporter: so you get up on there and you can turn your music back up and you stay over there. this is really a science experiment. it is turning into that. and we'll see how this works. okay. chandra, lead us through it. >> here we go. resistance between 5 and 8. between 5 and 8. >> reporter: okay, between 5 and 8. >> increase that speed. increase that speed. give me a sprint. 15 seconds. sprint it out. >> reporter: if i ride faster here, does the treadmill go faster out there? >> no. >> reporter: i was trying to get somebody else to up their intensity out there? >> no: the high resistance in your bike produces more watts, which is good and it goes into the grid. >> reporter: it means the power on the treadmill will last longer? >> no, the treadmill does not go faster. and then 15 seconds, sprint it out. >> reporter: myfoxdc.com is our website. we have a link to the washington sports club. now remember the green revolution is only here at the columbia heights location. so if you want to check it out, do that. also don't forget they are having free zumba through august at all of the different locations at different times to check it out if you want. stay with us, we have more fox 5 coming up after the break. come on, people, let me see it.
