Mark Beard, pastor at St. Helena Catholic Church in Amite, died Wednesday in a car crash, the Diocese of Baton Rouge said in a statement.

​​According to law enforcement reports, a fatal car accident occurred on Interstate 55, north of the state lines between Louisiana and Mississippi, at approximately 1.30 pm. Tragically, the accident resulted in the death of Father Mark Beard.

Father Beard was ordained in 2009 and delivered the benedictions at the first and second inaugurations of Gov. John Bel Edwards.
