NASA/Joel Kowsky(NEW YORK) -- NASA kicked off Monday its plan to send an unmanned space capsule into the moon's orbit, marking the initial launch in an ambitious plan to establish a long term presence on the moon for scientific discovery and economic development. The space capsule, called Artemis I, will travel for roughly 40 days -- reaching as close as 60 miles from the moon, and then 40,000 miles above the moon when orbiting over its dark side -- before landing in the Pacific Ocean off t...

CAPE CANAVERAL -- NASA is retargeting the launch of its first Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft for Sept.

NASA is now targeting Saturday (Sept. 3) for the launch of Artemis 1, whose first liftoff attempt on Monday (Aug. 29) was scuttled by a technical issue.

A bleed issue in one of the four RS-25 rocket engines scrubbed Monday’s debut launch of the Space Launch System and Orion spacecraft.

NASA officials said the Artemis I new launch date that was initially scheduled for Friday had to be moved due to bad weather. The weather is 60% no go for Friday but looks to be more favorable Saturday.

After Monday's postponement, the US space agency thinks it has a strategy to launch at the weekend.

NASA bailed on the Artemis I launch on Monday in the face of a leak, confounding engine issues, and foul weather. But they'll try to send their mega moon rocket into space again on Saturday, Sept. 3.
