Hamline University has terminated professor Erika Lopez Prater's contract after she showed a class devotional Islamic art depicting Muhammad.

(RNS) — An instructor at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, showed a 14th-century painting of Muhammad. A Muslim student objected. The instructor was let go.

An instructor at Hamline U showed an image of Muhammad in an art history class. The president criticized the instructor for doing so. Another professor, who tried to explain the situation with an essay in the student paper, had his piece removed.

"[T]rauma and lived experiences," the newspaper says, "are not open for debate."
