Wednesday, May 12, 2021 The original PlayStation was born out of Sony listening to developers and creating a platform that was as much for the creators as it was for the players. When doing research and development for the PS5, Sony did the same thing, building the optimal console for developers to work with. And system architect Mark Cerny says that the PS5 has seen “miraculously little pushback” from developers as a result. Speaking with Wired looking back on the first six months of the P...

It’s not unusual to find the first twelve to eighteen months of a console’s software line-up often prioritizing the technical leaps this new, latest generation of hardware, has brought. Sometimes, though not always, at the cost of everything else. A game that may indeed prove there’s an increase in visual fidelity compared to the previous console, but ends up creating an even more troublesome issue on the fact of it even being that fulfilling to engage with. A timeline of Mortal Kombat ripoffs from the 1990s NetherRealm’s winning formula kicked off a gold rush that never panned out Graphic: James Bareham/Polygon did. In a five-year span, video gamers in arcades and their homes were overrun by fighting games that followed the same format: battles to the death, often organized by some supernatural being; a sinister announcing voice commanding players to execute a helpless opponent; gratuitously brutal finishers that seemed designed to provoke outr...

Japan Studio is an odd little outfit, and while youll be familiar with th...

PS5 Firmware Update to Enable SSD Expansion This Summer Feb 26, 2021 04:29 EST The ability of SSD expansion built into the PlayStation 5 was unveiled almost a year ago by System Architect Mark Cerny. Sony, in fact, did add an NVMe M.2 port for this specific purpose, but when the console launched in November, we learned that it would not be active for the time being; a later firmware update would actually enable the SSD expansion. Right now, if you try to insert an NVMe SSD through the M.2 ...

Back when Mark Cerny revealed the PlayStation 5 hardware for the first time, we learned that the console would support third-party M.2 SSDs, just as long as they meet certain performance criteria. The PS5 has now been out for several months now, but this additional storage support has yet to be implemented. Fortunately, that is apparently set to change this summer.  According to Bloomberg’s sources, Sony is planning to ship a firmware update this summer, which will add support for additional...

The PS5 has an M.2 SSD slot for expandable storage. The ability to use the storage is currently locked and will be unlocked via a future update. The update could increase the speed of the PS5 fan to cool the console.
