More than $104 million in Pennsylvania Turnpike tolls went uncollected last year as the agency fully converted to all-electronic tolling, with the millions of motorists who don't use E-ZPass having a nearly 1 in 2 chance of riding without paying under the "toll-by-plate" license plate camera system.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission voted Tuesday to approve a 5% toll increase for 2022. The increase is slated to start Jan. 2 and will be effective across the entire system except on the Southern Beltway west of Pittsburgh. Tolls on the Pennsylvania Turnpike will be going up 5 percent next year. The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission approved the increase on Tuesday, and it will affect both E-ZPass and toll-by-plate customers, a news release states.
