The Ketchikan City Council in a regular meeting Thursday voted to spend up to $10,000 to install portable toilets at the Ketchikan Port to serve community members in lieu of a previous proposal to open the Berth 3 restrooms for the summer season, which would have necessitated an expenditure of about $75,000 to pay two employees to monitor them. Community activist Tony Flora remembered as teacher, fighter, friend

Anthony รขย€ยœTonyรขย€ย Flora, longtime organized labor advocate and community activist, died Friday of complications from a stem cell transplant related to his 14-month battle with non-Hodgkins T-cell lymphoma. He was 70. Flora, born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in the Long Island suburb of Massapequa, settled in South Bend because it was the hometown of his wife, Kristina Ann Lackman, who died in 2011.
