The number of Utahns quitting their jobs jumped sharply in the month of September, according to updated data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Unemployment rates in Utah are low but thousands haven’t returned to the workforce amid COVID pandemic and aren’t counted. While the lack of available workers is causing a headache for some businesses, Utah Department of Workforce Services chief economist Mark Knold said Utah’s economy is strong.

Utah registered its lowest unemployment rate on record, but thousands of workers havent returned to the labor force since the pandemic started and arent counted in the unemployment rate.

Utah hit its all-time record for lowest unemployment rate in October at 2.2%. The market was even tighter in southwestern Utah at 2%.
