Julian Assange's possible final appeal challenging his extradition to the U.S. began on Tuesday at the British High Court in London.

Julian Assange’s legal team returned to London’s High Court on Tuesday to fight for what could become his final attempt at avoiding extradition to the United States, where he is facing life in prison if convicted on espionage charges.

LONDON -- Julian Assanges lawyers opened a final U.K. legal challenge Tuesday to stop the WikiLeaks founder from being sent to the United States to face spying charges, arguing that American authorities are seeking to punish him for exposing serious criminal acts by the U.S. government.

If an appeal is turned down, Mr Assange could be extradited within weeks.

After two days of legal arguments, judges will consider whether to grant the WikiLeaks founder permission to appeal against his removal from the UK.

Julian Assange’s nearly 15-year legal battle began in 2010 when WikiLeaks published classified military files from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He took refuge in London’s Ecuadorian embassy, before being arrested by the Metropolitan Police in 2019 who were permitted by the Ecuadorian embassy to enter and seize him. He has been held for nearly five years in HM Prison Belmarsh.
