NASA developing tech with famous underwater explorers for future missions

Weighing about 550 pounds, the six-foot-long Orpheus drone cost nearly $2 million to build and was named for the Greek poet and prophet. The main goal for this next-generation mini-submarine that was engineered and constructed by WHOI in Massachusetts, will be to increase our knowledge of the deepest areas of our planet’s oceans known as the hadal zone. This exotic region is represented by radical trenches and troughs as deep as 20,000 to 36,000 feet, replicating challenges and conditions th...

Middle schoolers build and program robots at BC STEM Innovation Center

None of the students in Mr. Campbells seventh-hour class at the Battle Creek STEM Innovation Center are old enough to drive, but all of them can code a robot to parallel park. "We try the codes, and if they work, we keep them," sixth-grader Kailey Watkins explained matter-of-factly on Friday afternoon.  In addition to programming the LEGO EV3 to maneuver between lines of masking tape on the floor, Watkins and his project partner JhaNiece Turner built the robot.  "Its pretty simple," Watk...

Fact check: Image of Saturn is artist's rendering, not up-close photo

Cassini’s ‘grand finale’ Cassini launched on Oct. 15, 1997, as a joint venture among NASA, the European Space Agency and Italy’s space agency, carrying a probe called Huygens that would be used to study Saturn’s largest moon, Titan. It took almost seven years for Cassini to arrive at Saturn, where it spent about 13 years in the planet’s orbit. After completing multiple missions over almost 20 years in space, Cassini was running low on rocket fuel used to adjust course in its orbit o...
