Canada lends hand to snag pieces of Mars on new mission set to launch Thursday Mars is getting yet another visitor. If everything goes as planned on Thursday, NASAs Mars 2020 Perseverance rover will blast off from Cape Canaveral, Fla., on its way to search for signs of past life on the Red Planet. This is no run-of-the-mill rover. Perseverance is equipped with HD cameras to record what NASA refers to as the rovers "seven minutes of terror," its descent through the Martian atmosphere. Perseveran...

NASA’s First Weather Report From Jezero Crater on Mars Perseverance’s MEDA will help us understand how to prepare astronauts for a future on the Red Planet. The weather often plays a role in our daily plans. You might put on a light jacket when the forecast calls for a cool breeze or delay your travel plans because of an impending storm. NASA engineers use weather data to inform their plans, too, which is why they’re anal...

New Study Challenges Long-Held Theory of Fate of Mars Water Source: NASA Mars The new science results indicate that a large quantity of the Red Planets water is trapped in its crust rather than having escaped into space. Billions of years ago, according to geological evidence, abundant water flowed across Mars and collected into pools, lakes, and deep oceans. New NASA-funded research shows a substantial quantity of its water - between 30 and 99% - is trapped within minerals in t...

March 17, 2021 NASA’s Perseverance rover on Mars has just sent back its first initial science results, as well as some new audio recordings of wind and the rover’s laser zapping rocks. The first target for Perseverance’s SuperCam instrument was a flat, whitish rock that researchers have named Máaz, which is the Navajo word for Mars. Preliminary results show it has a basaltic composition. Image via NASA/ JPL-Caltech. It’s been a month since NASA’s Perseverance rover landed on Mars on ...

Hear NASAs Mars Perseverance Rover Zap Its SuperCam Laser on Red Planet On 3/11/21 at 4:29 AM EST NASAs latest Mars rover, Perseverance, has beamed the first acoustic recording of laser sounds taken from the red planet back to Earth. The U.S. space agency said an audio file obtained from an instrument called SuperCam contained sounds of a laser impacting its target—a rock formation named "Máaz" that was approximately 10 feet away from the exploration rover—on March 2. The recording contain...

11 March 2021, 11:20 am EST By NASA released a space recording that was taken on the Perseverance rover last February. The audio was captured by the SuperCam instrument, which the Los Alamos National Laboratory developed. The said instrument has been a useful venture of the French Space Agency in carrying out its operations like capturing the audio of laser zaps from the other distant planet. SuperCam Instrument is now a reality (Photo : Screenshot from YouTube/Gateway to Knowledge) Experts ...

Image Credit: Vadim Sadovski/Shutterstock.com Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) instruments built into the latest generation of Martian rovers will provide planetary scientists with a wealth of new data on Martian geology – but to learn from it, they will need to overcome a critical challenge with their machine learning models. Because scientists do not have real Martian rock samples to work with in the lab, there is no training data to calibrate the machine learning models usually...
