更先進的火星直升機設計，工程師希望深入火星洞穴
有鑑於 NASA 機智號火星直升機首次出任務就取得重大成功，工程師們正在將注意力轉向未來的火星科學直升機，新增功能可能包括深入地下洞穴。
火星無人直升機機智號（Ingenuity）是第一架「在另顆星球進行動力控制飛行」的飛行器，由於火星大氣稀薄，密度僅地球大氣密度 1%，因此要在火星上駕駛一台靠旋翼旋轉與空氣發生相對運動、產生升力的直升機並非易事，地球上，商業客機飛行高度約離地 10,600 公尺，但直升機在火星地表起飛，相當於在地球表面以上 30,480 公尺處飛行。
為了測試能不能成功在火星開直升機，NASA 設計了機智號，並在待命 2 個月後順利於美東時間 4 月 19 日展開首飛，圓滿達成離地 3 公尺、空中懸停 39.1 秒的任務。
