The first COVID-19 vaccinations are underway at U.S. nursing homes, where the virus has killed more than 110,000 people, even as the nation struggles to contain a surge so alarming it has spurred California to dispense thousands of body bags and line up refrigerated morgue trucks.
With the rollout of shots picking up speed Wednesday, lawmakers in Washington closed in on a long-stalled $900 billion coronavirus relief package that would send direct payments of around $600 to most Americans. Meanwhile, the U.S. appeared to be days away from adding a second vaccine to its arsenal.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) West Virginia is rapidly deploying doses of the coronavirus vaccine to residents and workers at long-term care centers, setting an ambitious target of vaccinating all facilities within three weeks.
The state with one of the oldest and most at-risk populations is prioritizing its care center residents alongside health workers. Officials are working with small and local pharmacies to reach long-term care communities across the rural state, leapfrogging most states that are relying on a partnership with CVS and Walgreens to kick in any day now.
“We’re making progress towards being the first in the nation to vaccinate all nursing homes and assisted livings in our state,” said Marty Wright, head of the West Virginia Health Care Association, which represents nursing homes and assisted living communities.
Health officials say COVID-19 vaccine distribution running smoothly in West Virginia by Tyler Arnold, The Center Square | December 17, 2020 11:00 AM Print this article
COVID-19 vaccine distribution in West Virginia has run smoothly so far, according to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (WVDHHR) and a statewide health care association.
Over the course of the first week, West Virginia expects to receive more than 60,000 doses. The initial doses will be given to the top priority groups, which include staff and residents of long-term care facilities and health care workers. More than 150,000 people are eligible for the state’s Phase 1 vaccination, which means some will have to wait for their initial dose. It is not yet available to the general population.
