The government has reintroduced the Mangalya Bhagya marriage scheme in Mysuru to help poor families who cannot afford the increasing cost of wedding expenses. Eight couples entered wedlock at the simple mass marriage ceremony organised by the muzrai department at Sri Srikanteshwara Swamy Temple in Nanjangud.
Textile trader Yusuf Abdullahi admitted he could not afford to marry despite being 30 years old until Nigeria's northern Kano state financed and staged mass weddings for 1,800 couples.The mass wedding programme has helped boost Kano's economic development by providing work to furniture makers, hospitality workers and textile traders, Yusuf said.
Condemning the alleged incident, state Congress unit chief Nath, termed it as an insult to the women and questioned the legality of testing procedures.
