Service members, veterans and their families who live in rural areas in the U.S. are struggling to access medical care as hospitals and facilities continue to build back systems that were ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Air Force is still not flying Osprey aircraft in Japan despite getting the green light to lift a monthslong flight hold following a deadly crash off the country's southern coast, but the Marine Corps has put its aircraft based there back in the skies.

Paying for transportation, lodging and meals for those 12 round trips from a service member's home station to the location of their health care cost the department $44,791, a Pentagon spokesperson said.
