A new School District of Philadelphia policy that would place all qualified magnet high school applicants into a lottery-based system for enrollment will continue despite concerns from parents and community members. Superintendent William Hite says that the policy will enhance equity in admissions at these special admissions high schools.

In her letter to the editor last week ("Fix the crumbling schools," Dec. 8), J. R. Masterman School senior Queenie Chen asks the same question I posed at the end of the year-and-a-half lockdown of Philadelphia public schools: " … what has the school been doing when they had over a year to fix all these problems in an empty school building?"

Teachers and parents at the magnet school fear there is harmful asbestos in the school. District leaders say problems have been fixed and school is safe.
