Second order optical merons, or light pretending to be a ferromagnet

Krol The scientists have demonstrated how to structure light such that its polarization behaves like a collective of spins in a ferromagnet forming half-skyrmion (also known as merons). To achieve this the light was trapped in a thin liquid crystal layer between two nearly perfect mirrors. Skyrmions in general are found, e.g., as elementary excitations of magnetization in a two-dimensional ferromagnet but do not naturally appear in electromagnetic (light) fields. One of the key concepts in physics, and science overall is the notion of a field which can describe the spatial distribution of a physical quantity. For instance, a weather map shows the distributions of temperature and pressure (these are known as scalar fields), as well as the wind speed and direction (known as a vector field).

Queensland to review new QCE system after feedback from schools, teachers ThuThursday 25 The Queensland curriculum authority will undertake a review of the new QCE system. ( Share Print text only Cancel Queensland s curriculum authority is undertaking a short, sharp review of the new Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) in a bid to improve the system for senior students this year, after receiving feedback from schools during the rollout. Key points: The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority will undertake a review of the new Queensland Certificate of Education system It comes after feedback from schools, and a formal request for a review from the Queensland Teachers Union, and is separate to a planned evaluation of the syllabus

pendulum - Everything2 com

pendulum Mon Sep 25 2000 at 5:07:48 Often used in scrying. Pendulums can be made of almost anything, often though a stone of some kind on the end of some cord. If they are attuned to the owner, they will answer yes or no questions. Not cosmic magic 8 balls, they will correctly answer, although sometimes they return a firm maybe, i don t know . A pendulum not properly attuned is useless; you can tell almost the moment you pick it up whether it will work for you or not. They respond differently to different people; mine circles clockwise for yes , counterclockwise for no, and jerks up and down or back and forth for maybe . I ve heard of pendulums that go north-south for yes and east-west, not circling just swinging; it varies. The best way to have a key is to ask it questions you know the answers to, a set of yes and a set of no, and from this pattern you should be able to discern the correct response.
