Teachers call for abolition of Ofsted and league tables

Industrial reporter DELEGATES at the National Education Union’s annual conference backed a motion today calling for the abolition of Ofsted and performance-based league tables. Over three quarters (77 per cent) of the more than 10,000 school staff ho responded to the union’s State of Education survey, published to coincide with this week’s online event, said that reducing the role of the education inspectorate was vital to help schools recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. Respondents said that reducing the pressure of “accountability measures” such as Ofsted and league tables that rank schools based on national exam results would enable them to focus on helping students catch up on learning after school closures during the pandemic.

Unions hit out at PM for lack of travel support in restriction lifting

Industrial reporter TRANSPORT unions have blasted Boris Johnson’s latest update on plans to restart international holidays as a “missed opportunity” to provide much-needed clarity for the aviation sector.  On Monday, the Prime Minister said the government was “hopeful” that overseas leisure travel could resume from May 17 and would aim to give the sector “as much notice as possible.” He unveiled the outline of a traffic light system which will see travellers returning from countries rated “green” not being required to self-isolate, though pre-departure and post-arrival tests will still be needed. Only British citizens and those resident in the country will be allowed to return from “red list” countries, with passengers paying for a mandatory 10-day hotel quarantine period on arrival.

Deliveroo riders to strike over pay and conditions as company nosedives on London Stock Exchange

Industrial reporter DELIVEROO riders are striking tomorrow for a real living wage, enhanced Covid-19 safety protections and basic workers’ rights to coincide with the company’s listing on the London Stock Exchange. The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) said that socially distanced protests will also be held in London, York, Sheffield, Reading and Wolverhampton. Supportive action is expected internationally in Australia, France, the Netherlands, Ireland and Spain, underlining the fact that the takeaway giant is now the world’s “most protested app-based platform,” the IWGB said. Following last month’s revelation that Deliveroo pays some riders, classed as “self-employed,” as little as £2 per hour, at least 12 major investment firms have indicated they will not buy shares in the company as its valuation plummeted from £9 billion to £5.5bn.
