he can have whoever he wants. ideally you have whoever you want and shares your world view and shares your philosophy with regard to a foreign policy from day one. unfortunately that didn t happen. and clearly secretary tillerson and mattis were moderating force for this president. pompeo is more in line with the world view of this president. and certainly will reflect that. he s been a lot more hesitant to be critical of the president on many of these issues. and that s what we expect moving forward. they will be in sync with regard to foreign policy. the president does have the right to have the team he wants. unfortunately the way he want about this i think was extremely disrespectful, but that s not a surprise. look, i ve spoken with a lot of republicans this morning. they are very hesitant to say anything about tillerson. but they re very encouraging about pompeo. they support his national security, his credentials with regard to that, what he will do with trump. however some are
tillerson who pushed that forward. and nikki haley. and so now secretary mattis isn t going to have that same partnership. he ll find a way to work with mike pompeo, john, but it will be a different relationship for him. jim sciutto is with us as well. and, jim, the director to replace the nominee to replace mike pompeo at the cia will be deputy director gina haskell, an intelligence lifer, respected by many inside this community. but also someone who has been a controversial figure in the past as well. no question. she was involved in one of the most difficult, controversial eras in the cia, which was regarding the question of enhanced interrogation, in the words of some, torture in the words of others, and not only involved in directing that program, but also involved in an effort to cover it up, to destroy videos that documented
regular order. let s bring in our military analyst lieutenant general mark hertling. mattis isn t saying a few days or a few weeks, a government shutdown will be devastating to the military. he s saying you keep kicking the can down the road, keep giving us temporary funding measures and that really hurts. talk about why it hurts. poppy, i got to tell you over the last couple of days, while i ve watched democrats and republics on both sides blame each other for the shutdown, this is only one part that every military commander in the world is just furious about. because it is the continuing resolution. you can t as a military commander, i was responsible in various jobs to create my own budget. when the congress doesn t allocate funds to the military, then as a guy who has to create a budget for training and operations and taking care of soldiers and their families, it just throws you way out of whack. it is not just a shut down, though there is a lot of myths perpetrated over the l
around him. let s remember, the president sets the agenda. it doesn t matter who he picks for cabinet secretaries. it matters that they re competent and instill confidence. but mattis isn t going to make decisions, trump is. the new secretary of state, whoever it is, whether it s john bolton or mitt romney, doesn t matter. how come you re not putting rudy in the discussion? who is better qualified? i think i would argue that mitt romney is probably better qualified than based on what experience? look, i thinking when you ve run for president twice, when you ve examined all the issues that you have to deal with around the world, and when you have the kind of negotiating skills that romney has from building a company, working through the olympics, i think that his temperament julgiuliani travels around t world. the issue with giuliani is confirmation. can he get through a confirmation hearing? why would he not? i think the issue is temperament. i think rudy giuliani
