The Central Water Commission has blamed rampant construction in the spring zone for cracks and ground fissures in Joshimath town in Chamoli district. A report submitted to the Uttarakhand high court stated that the construction of buildings had stopped the flow of spring water, causing land subsidence. The report also highlighted the release of groundwater and seismic activities as possible triggers for the subsidence. The town of Joshimath has over 4,200 structures, with nearly 400 catering to pilgrims visiting for the Chardham Yatra. The next hearing on the matter is scheduled for September 25. | Latest News India
