The social media activity of ESPN NFL analyst Marcus Spears has left some fans confused in the wake of the network's stunning layoffs Friday.

ESPN was hit with massive layoffs on Friday including some of the most recognizable faces on the network in high-profile positions.

ESPN is laying off around 20 high-profile sports commentators as part of a cost-cutting initiative, a source with knowledge of the layoffs told CNN.

 

The announcement resembled what happened in April of 2017, when reporters and hosts were informed at one time that they would no longer be on the air.

Jeff Van Gundy, Jalen Rose and Keyshawn Johnson were among the list of roughly 20 staffers who lost their jobs.

Jeff Van Gundy, Suzy Kolber, Jalen Rose and Steve Young are among roughly 20 ESPN commentators and reporters who were laid off on Friday as part of job cuts by the network.

Jeff Van Gundy had been with ESPN since he left coaching in 2007. He's known for his strong criticism of NBA officiating.

ESPN made the sudden announcement on Friday morning as the network's parent company, Disney, works to save tens of millions of dollars.
