Arkansas Board of Corrections Chairman Benny Magness intends to finish out his term despite Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders call for him to resign immediately, according to the Department of Corrections.

An auditor last week warned that five Arkansas prisons lack the staff and infrastructure to handle hundreds of additional inmates under a controversial expansion plan.

Attorney General Tim Griffin accused the state Board of Corrections of violating state law twice at a meeting last week in which it went into executive session and then voted to hire outside counsel.

Arkansas prison officials, in defiance of a state oversight board, will proceed with adding more than 600 temporary beds for inmates in existing facilities across the state’s prison system.

Although the state Department of Corrections is moving forward with plans to add 492 beds to three prisons, renovations are needed at two of those facilities before the beds are placed and inmates are transferred.
