ST. LOUIS St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson s decision not to seek re-election to a second term means that someone new will inherit the city s complicated budget struggles. Four candidates made the ballot for the March 2 primary election, which will determine which two will square off in the April 6 general election.
We asked all four candidates how they will manage the pension system one of the city s largest annual fixed costs and how they will balance any spending needs against the city s limited ability to raise new revenue. Here s what they had to say.

Lewis Reed has been president of the city’s Board of Aldermen for 14 years, and before that, represented the city’s 6th Ward for two terms. But while his track record in St. Louis government is long, he acknowledged on Thursday’s
St. Louis on the Air that he’s been hamstrung by the limitations of the legislative branch.
It’s why he’s running for mayor.
“As a president of the board, I can pass laws and things of that nature, but implementation of all those things resides in the executive branch,” he said. “And that s one of the reasons I m running to become mayor of the city of St. Louis, because I understand how to operate that branch, and what the powers are that are vested in it, and how we can actually move the city forward. And how you do that in a way where you do it in a cooperative and collaborative fashion.”

The relationship to viewers has evolved as fewer people watch, and there is greater turnover among on-air talent.Â
