OPINION: Six months ago my partner went to their doctor for a battery of blood tests. Everything came back normal – glucose levels were good, and haemoglobin was in the normal range – but the doctor did note one thing: my partner’s lead levels were surprisingly high. He put this down to living in Europe. Some historians hypothesise that lead poisoning brought the Roman Empire to its knees. The ancient elites would drink wine from lead vessels, and channel spring water to their homes through lead pipes.
