Times Leader Staff Writer A MAN bundled up and wearing a face mask to stay warm shovels snow after a recent snowstorm in Martins Ferry. MARTINS FERRY City leaders are reminding everyone that keeping their sidewalks clear of snow and ice is not just for their benefit, it is also the law. During this week’s Martins Ferry City Council meeting, Councilman Rick Rodgers reminded people that both residents and business property owners are responsible for clearing their sidewalks after it snows, said Council President Kristine Davis. “We acknowledged the frequency of the snow this year, but people need to make some reasonable effort to keep sidewalks clear,” Davis said. “Many have not.”

MARTINS FERRY Those visiting the city of Martins Ferry will receive a bright new welcome, thanks to a new sign installed this week. The Martins Ferry Lions Club, with help from city workers and Mayor John Davies, installed the sign on Hanover Street a few yards up from the Ohio 7 intersection. Bruce Shrodes, Lions Club member and a city councilman, said the old wooden sign was falling apart and needed to be replaced.

Those dedicated individuals willingly put their lives on the line to shield others from danger. They work long hours in uncomfortable conditions to complete investigations. They face unpleasant circumstances and witness terrible tragedies while responding to calls for help. Then, in their spare time, they participate in fundraisers and toy drives and spend time speaking to civic groups and students. Unfortunately, as in any profession, there are a few bad apples among police ranks. And even very good, well-meaning officers can make mistakes.

MARTINS FERRY Damage to the Martins Ferry City Building’s roof may soon get repaired. After the conclusion of City Council’s regular meeting Wednesday, council President Kristine Davis said members granted Mayor John Davies, who has a background as a contractor, permission to rent equipment that will be used to place a temporary patch on the roof. A section of the roof was damaged in September after a portion of the building’s facade fell off. Much of the debris fell to a parking lot below, but some pieces also caused damage to the roof. No one was injured.
