The recent retirement of Chief Lawrence Suffern and a prior retirement of a deputy chief left the 79-member police department with a void in its two top positions and came after months of tensions within the ranks. Suffern, who served with the department for 33 years, left Thursday, a day after city officials announced his retirement. Officials have not named any possible candidates to fill the high-ranking police posts.
