Several company officials and HR heads ET spoke to say a classical MBA degree is losing out to the current market trend of hiring talent with specialised skills and those who come at a lesser cost. Ironically, this fall in demand for MBA degree holders comes at a time when their supply is increasing. A record 330,000 candidates from across India registered for the Common Admission Test (CAT) in 2023, a 30% increase from the previous year - a reflection of the aspirational value of the degree.

Jere, citing a Supreme Court judgement, reiterated that no educational institution or university is permitted to conduct technical courses, including MBA programmes, without obtaining prior approval from AICTE. The AICTE further clarified that an MBA, being a comprehensive two-year postgraduate degree course, cannot be condensed into a mere 10-day timeframe. ​

The shorter GRE remains section level adaptive, granting students flexibility to answer questions in sequences that suit them and modify their responses as needed, within each timed section. More than 1300 business schools in 72 countries accept GRE scores for their masters, MBA and doctoral programs.

Post-graduate courses are two-year programme and cannot be completed in 10 days, AICTE said. Students gain advanced skills in these two years, something that is impossible to do in ten days, it emphasised.

Harvard Business School reports the lowest job placement rates in over five years, with only 86% of recent MBA graduates securing offers, signaling a broader trend of reduced hiring.

No institution can run technical courses including MBA/Management courses without taking approval from AICTE.
